Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was
injured in a motorcycle accident late Monday morning at the intersection of
Second
Avenue and the
10th
Street Bridge in
Pittsburgh.
According to published reports,
Roethlisberger was traveling on Second
Avenue when a vehicle coming in the
opposite direction turned left in front of him. Roethlisberger was unable to
stop and hit the passenger side door of the vehicle.
Following the accident,
Roethlisberger was transported to
Mercy Hospital.
Dr. Larry Jones, Chief of Trauma at
Mercy Hospital issued the following statement
shortly before 2 p.m.:
"Mr. Roethlisberger is in serious
but stable condition., He is right now in the operating room undergoing some
surgery for injuries he received in this accident today. We want to leave it at
that for right now. He is stable, and he was talking to me when he was leaving
for the operating room. He is coherent, he's making sense, he knows what
happened, he knows where he is. From that standpoint he is very
stable."
Lt. Kevin Krauss of the Pittsburgh
Police Department said police are investigating the accident and that he
expected the department to issue a press release some time after
3 p.m. today.
"On
behalf of everyone within the Steelers organization, I want to express my
concern for Ben Roethlisberger," said Steelers president Art Rooney II. "I am
sure Ben knows that we are praying for his complete recovery. So far, we have
been encouraged by the early reports from the medical team at
Mercy
Hospital.
"Our public
relations staff will pass along any additional updates as we receive them from
the hospital."
